Chris Earnshaw Ph.D.
I have spent more than 20 years in the Japanese pharmaceutical market, working for The Wellcome Foundation (now GSK) and Banyu Pharmaceuticals (now part of Merck). I have also held senior positions in Societe Generale Bank, Shearson Lehman Bros. (at that time part of American Express) and two consulting firms. More recently I was the president of a U.S. branding and regulatory consultancy based in Tokyo.
I graduated London University in Japanese and Chinese, my Master's was in Transpersonal Studies at Atlantic University and my Ph.D. was in Neuroscience at the International Institute of Advanced Studies in Palo Alto for work done at Tokai University Hospital and Tokyo Denki University in Tokyo. I am qualified in marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, as well as being an Emergency Medical Technician and an AHA certified Advanced Pediatric Life Support Instructor.
I have authored “The Japanese Ethical Pharmaceutical Tariff” (pub. Jiho Publishing), “Asthma Patients’ Manual” (Banyu internal publication) and the “World OTC Market 2003” (in Japanese, pub Yano Publishing).
I'm Scientific Advisor to the Noguchi Hideyo Foundation and Director of the Social Research Centre Japan, a suicide prevention NPO.
As many clients are based overseas, initial consultations are done by email and phone. There is no charge for these initial "meetings".
Fees are charged on a per diem basis after agreeing the length of the project. The minimum project is two days, for which the fee structure below does not apply. In this case all fees need to be paid in advance. My fee is very competitive, less than one third that charged by major consultancies. See Services
I will send an outline of the project with a Gantt chart to the client, together with payment points and other milestones with the English contract. On receipt of the initial payment the project starts.
For overseas clients a 30% down payment is required, followed by payments spread equally over the length of the project, with the final payment on completing the project. For clients in Japan the initial payment is 25%. These fees include all transportation in the 23 wards of Tokyo and all communication charges. These fees do not include honoraria to interviewees &c.
